The Sacramento coffee community knows how to embrace competition and collaboration as it continues to grow in quality and character. Four Sac-town roasters have created their own March Madness, joining forces to put the Sacramento Public Latte Art Tournament (aka SPLAT).
Insight Coffee will host the second round of the series at 7 p.m. this Thursday at its Southside Cafe & Roastery (1901 S St. in Sacramento). The event will feature local art, music, the Sacatomatoes food truck, and general merrymaking. The event will build on the excitement generated at the first round of SPLAT, which was held at Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters and drew over 45 competitors from all over the Capitol and Bay Area who put on an amazing display for the coffee loving crowd.
Chris Ortega went home the winner in this past round, narrowly beating out exceptional competition from Che Garcia and Cole Cuchna. Lessons were learned and rivalries founded that will make each round more exciting than the last!
In the SPLAT format, baristas compete head to head and are scored based on contrast, texture, symmetry, and difficulty of pour. The winner advances to the next round in true March Madness style. Competitors also accumulate their scores for all four events, which will be totaled for the grand prize awarded after the fourth and final event hosted at Old Soul Co.
The next event in the series will take place May 8th at Temple Fine Coffee and Tea. Onward and upward Sacramento!
