BMag Back Atcha – Week of July 8-14

Welcome to BMag Back Atcha, our weekly blog-in-review post for July 8 -14. This is your one-stop post for you to catch up on any of this week’s action on the BMag blog that you might have missed.

First we had a report on Monday for the just-announced speakers added to LaMarzocco’s Out of the Box event in Milan, Italy in October which will be held concurrently with the huge, bi-annual trade show and industry event known as HOST.

Then we had a story about  Emily Brock, a woodworking wizard, and the owner of  Board and Bread, which is her line of handcrafted wooden tools such as serving boards, spoons, and paddles for stirring coffee during the manual brew process. Her work was also this week’s Humpday Giveaway prize!

Next up was story on an upcoming event in Colorado called  It’s All About Coffee Lecture & Forum on July 20 hosted by the  Rocky Mountain Craft Coffee Alliance. You can read about here:

As the week turned to Wednesday it was the return (after a short 4th of July hiatus) of BMag’s weekly trivia contest for awesome prizes known as Humpday Giveaway. This week’s winner snagged a handcrafted wooden coffee paddle from Board and Bread.

Our December+January 2007 issue cover barista Costas  Pliatsikas has been even busier than usual this past year: besides operating his successful company,  Costas Roastery, he has been working night and day on the final professional versions of a coffee tool he invented back in 2005 when he was the Swedish Barista Champion. He calls it the Intelligent Dosing Ring, or idr. Sarah had a chat with him as he talked about the idr.

Ken had an interview with the inventor of a new app called CoffeeNotes, Greg Mayorm, as he looks to crowdfunding website Kickstarter to get his app off the ground. CoffeeNotes does a lot of amazing things like turning your smartphone into a grind analyzer and makes adjusting brewing recipes a snap.

Finally we had a photo gallery of Unic espresso machines, which was on display at the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe’s show in Nice, France last month. The exhibit traced the history of Unic and the various machines the company had built over its near century of history.

And that’s it for the week. Thanks for stopping by! Stay tuned to the BMag blog next work for more news, interviews, and of course, another round of Humpday Giveaway!
