Education at Peregrine Espresso, Washington, D.C.

Anyone whose ever met Ryan Jensen knows the guy’s a visionary. After doing quite well on the competition circuit for a while, Ryan and his wife opened Peregrine Espresso a stone’s throw from the White House in 2008. [Trivia: what cafe occupied the space prior to Peregrine?] It was followed by two additional cafes opened in 2011 and 2012.

We were honored to feature Ryan on the cover of our October+November 2010 issue ”the guy’s a terrific role model in the specialty coffee industry. His company is all quality, from its well trained, personable baristas to the excellence of the products it serves (they use Counter Culture, btw).

So it’s no wonder to learn that Ryan is expanding Peregrine’s offerings. Here’s the press release:

Peregrine Espresso is excited to announce the development of two new classes aimed at educating consumers on the finer points of coffee preparation. The classes, Espresso Fundamentals and Better Brewing at Home, take place at Peregrine Espresso’s Union Market coffee bar in northeast DC. The team of instructors includes Peregrine Espresso’s experienced staff members and barista trainers, including many regional and national award-winning baristas.  Owner of Peregrine Espresso Ryan Jensen says, œI’ve been waiting years to give our customers an opportunity to learn these techniques in a formal setting. So many members of our staff are gifted educators and have a lot of coffee knowledge to share.

During Espresso Fundamentals, students learn the basics of espresso and milk technique while gaining experience on the finest professional equipment. The class is limited to four students in a two-to-one student-teacher ratio for the most complete learning experience. Better Brewing at Home focuses on manual brewing in the home kitchen setting, equipping students with the techniques essential for making delicious pourover coffee. The class will delve into the principles of coffee extraction and how to control coffee brewing variables to create consistent, excellent results.

The fall 2013 class schedule is listed below and has been posted on Peregrine Espresso’s website along with instructions for signing up. Espresso Fundamentals is $95 per student, Better Brewing at Home is $60 per student and both classes are approximately two hours long. In addition to fine instruction, all students receive a bag of coffee so that they may continue refining their technique at home.

CLASS DATES

Espresso Fundamentals:  November 5,  November 19,  December 3,  December 17

Better Brewing at Home:  November 11,  December 2,  December 16
