NORDIC BARISTA CUP GOES WILD
Nordic Barista Cup takes advantage of the wild Icelandic nature Friday18th of September.
However the weather in Iceland is unpredictable so you have to come prepared – come sunshine or rain.

Here is a list of things you should consider bringing: Good sneakers or hiking boots, wool socks, wool or fleece underwear, raincoat or jacket, waterproof pants, fleece or wool sweather, warm gloves, hats/scarf, flash light, sun glasses.

You should definitely bring: Swimsuit and towel and Icelandic currency. You will need all of it!

THE BASICS OF MILK
At NBC 2004 in Iceland there was a lecture about milk. And later there was a visit to a cowhouse where the teams had to milk a cow and steam the milk for a cappuccino.

This year in Iceland we will look at milk with a magnifier and further examine the chemistry of the milk.

Biologist and milk scientist Morten Münchow from Denmark will take you through the molecules and proteins in the different kinds of milk (full cream milk, low-fat milk and skimmed milk).

COUNTRYSIDE JACUZZI
We will spend 2 nights in modern huts, where we will sleep 6-12 persons in each hut. All huts have toilet/ shower, living room, kitchen, electricity, heating, Wi-Fi internet and… outdoor jacuzzi.

The stay at the huts is included in the event price. Food, coffee, tea, water and necessities are also included. Bed linen, beer and alcohol are additional costs.

So when you book your hotel in Reykjavik, please be aware of the 2 nights in the huts. Meaning that you should not book hotel for Thursday 17/9  + Friday 18/9.

BASIC ROASTING AND GRINDING
Without unveiling too much we can inform you that the program for Nordic Barista Cup includes “basic roasting” and “basic grinding”.

The national teams as well as attendees will be challenged in a different manner as regards roasting and grinding coffee.

Let’s put it this way: do-it-yourself is back!

COSTA RICA COE + FIELD TRIP
There will be tasty coffees from Costa Rica on the cupping table during Nordic Barista Cup. Costa Rica is the 2009 focus country and the cupping will involve top coffees from the Costa Rican Cup of Excellence.
Susi Spindler, Cup of Excellence will host a lecture about Cup of Excellence.

The 2010 NBC field trip will go to Costa Rica. Farm stays, coffee picking and washing, cuppings and Costa Rican culture etc. will be on the program.
Anyone can join us on the NBC field trip. You can buy seats during NBC 2009.

POOL PARTY
The world-famed NBC entertainers from Norway amused us in 2005 (pic), 2006 and 2007. This year they will put on their speedos and bikinis and shower us with a pool party like you have never seen before.

The five Nordic national teams might be tested in 200 meter crawl, or answering difficult questions while sitting in a 50 ºC hot pot or makig aoerpress while going down the swimming pool slide ¦ Or something else.

You never know what the Norwegians come up with.

THE GOLDEN CIRCLE
There will be some time for leisure and sightseeing during Nordic Barista Cup 2009.

Saturday morning (19th) we will take you on a tour to the three of the major sights in Iceland:

First to the Geysir area where hot springs erupt every 10 minutes. Then to Gullfoss, the “Golden Waterfall”, the majestic waterfall and finally to Tingvellir (pic), where Iceland was founded in year 930.

This tour is also known as the Golden Circle.

PUBLIC DAY
Saturday 19th of September we open the Reykjavik Art Muesum for the public.

The day will contain competitions for the national teams, Nordic Roaster 2009 competition and off course the NBC bazaar and NBC auction. At the auction you can buy the famous 2006 WBC goat.

This year the collected money goes to to the charity project Manos Abiertas in Costa Rica. You can read more about the project here.

  1. There is lots of fun stuff to do now that you are in Iceland. You can go horseback riding, take a dive, go whale watching, bathe in hot springs, or search for the “hidden people”.
