So hopefully you’ve started receiving your copy of the August/September issue featuring World Barista Champion, Stephen Morrissey. It seems like it’s only been a few weeks since Copenhagen, and yet we’re already moving on to determining the 2009 WBC champion. Sorry, Stephen, in coffee as in fashion, Sarah tells me, one day you’re in, the next day you’re out.

So tomorrow the whole thing gets underway again as Canada starts narrowing the field to find its champion for the new year tomorrow. And the Western Regional features some top-tier competitors and barista all-stars including 2007 Canadian champion Colter Jones and the return of three-time Canadian champion Sammy Piccolo!

You can read all about it in the Vancouver Sun here.

  1. yes, the Western Regional in Canada. Sammy took first, Colter took second, and Spencer (first time competitor from JJ Bean) placed third. It was actually the fourth and final regional in Canada this competition year, and the field of 16 is now set for the Canadian Championships which is happening in Montreal Oct 21 & 22. (Canada takes the top 3 from each of their 4 regions, plus a “wild card” (4th or 5th place from each region out of a name draw).

The Mexican Championships on September 5 – 7 will be one of the first (maybe the first) national body to select their champion for WBC Atlanta.

Rule and score sheet changes for 2009 have been finalized and should be disseminated any day. (They will be using them at the National Body championships.)

    Hurray!!!
