This coffee job might be perfect for you
I hear from talented baristas looking for a new job almost as often as I get wind of coffee jobs available—and it makes sense. The specialty-coffee community is dynamic and evolving, with more and more skilled baristas in the field all the time. Still, the best baristas want to find a place where they can hang their hat—er, stash their tamp. They want job security—who doesn’t?
We’re excited to tell you, then, about a great opportunity in New York City for baristas looking for a great place to work with solid coffee people for good money with excellence benefits. They even offer weekly bonuses!
Pret A Manger is hiring for its New York team. Here’s the dealio: You must have at least one to two years experience, and be comfortable with both manual and automatic espresso machines. Other job requirements? Love coffee. Have passion. Sound like you?
Pret baristas can expect:
• A very competitive starting rate, plus a weekly bonus (say whaaa?)
• Free breakfast and lunch
• Benefits including paid time off, discounts, and of course, Pret’s legendary parties.
We chatted with Pret’s recruiting manager, Billy Rodriguez, about why the job might be a great fit for our readers:
Barista Mag: What makes Pret A Manger great place to work as a barista?
Billy: Our baristas are our coffee experts in our shops. They are empowered to train, coach and develop all of our team members, as well as our managers. Once hired, our baristas go through a thorough and rigorous training program. They learn how to operate our complex coffee and espresso machines, and get to interact with our fantastic customers throughout the day. We credit our baristas with generating the “buzz” that you feel each time you walk into a Pret shop. And we are proud to offer our baristas competitive pay and excellent benefits.
BMag: What kind of people are you looking for?
Billy: We are looking for baristas who are enthusiastic, passionate about coffee and team players. They need to be skilled at making espresso-based drinks, and confident in sharing their knowledge and expertise. And if they are skilled at latte art, that’s certainly a plus.
BMag: Can you tell us about the unique culture at Pret a Manger that potential employees could look forward to being a part of?
Billy: Pret is a unique company with a very strong corporate culture. We pride ourselves in recruiting the “Right Pret People” and working together to achieve our greatest potential. We are constantly encouraging our employees to further their development pathways, grow within the company and reach for the stars. We have many success stories—many of our general managers and leaders within the company started as team members—and we are very proud of our people and enjoy rewarding them accordingly.
Thanks, Billy! Sounds like a pretty cool gig!
