When my spirits are low, like they are this week from the untimely and incredibly tragic loss of not one but two incredible women from our barista community ”Christina Furr and Emelyne Smith ”I’m buoyed by gestures like the one being made for this week’s Humpday Giveaway.
There is a person, who would like to remain anonymous, that is offering up one heck of a gift for this week’s Humpday Giveaway on Barista Magazine’s blog: she would like to help send a barista to the Barista Guild of America’s (BGA) Camp, which takes place in Southern California, October 13 “16.
While she would love to pay all expenses for a barista to go to camp, that’s a lot of money ”registration costs have gone up to a whopping $859 for BGA members. But this generous soul wants to take care of a lot of that ticket price (which includes lodging, meals, and all classes and activities at camp). She has committed to offering up $559 toward camp registration.
That means the winner would be responsible for the last $300, as well as his or her own transportation. (Note: The cost for someone who is not a BGA member, but is an SCAA member, is $959; the cost for someone who is neither a BGA nor an SCAA member is $1,059. So if the winner is an SCAA member but not a BGA member, he/she would be responsible for $400 of the fee; and if the winner is neither a BGA member nor an SCAA member, he/she would be responsible for $500 of the fee.)
Sounds pretty amazing to me! What a wonderfully generous gift! To learn about all the classes that will be offered at camp, go HERE.
So beginning at 7 a.m. (Pacific time) on Wednesday, and lasting through 6:59 a.m. (Pacific) on Thursday, we hope you come back here to Barista Magazine’s blog and try to win this amazing gift! You’ll have to answer a (pretty easy-to-figure-out) trivia question from the new issue of Barista Magazine (and if you don’t have a copy of the magazine, you can look through the entire thing online for free by clicking HERE). Then you type your answer into the blog comments section, cross your fingers, and wait to find out whether you’ve won on Thursday, August 29, when we announce the winner at 10 a.m. on the blog.
BECAUSE THIS IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF PRIZE THAN USUAL, we ask that people who enter are aware of the following:
¢ You must be able to come up with the additional $300 (or non BGA/SCAA price difference) for camp registration.
¢ The donor of this awesome prize will send the $559 directly to the BGA toward the winner’s registration. That is to say, the winner of this week’s Humpday Giveaway will not win $559 cash.
Regarding this wonderfully generous person who is giving this gift to one of you lucky baristas out there, I begged her to let me reveal her identity but she really isn’t making this gift to be in the spotlight; she just wants to make the gesture.
Makes you feel pretty good about the caliber of people we have in our industry, huh? Me, too.
