BARISTA MAGAZINE
In June we were lucky enough to witness history at the World Barista Championship in Amsterdam when Agnieszka Rojewska became the first woman to win the championship in the 19 years of the competition. We at Barista Magazine were already fans of Agnieszka—we had just featured her on the cover of the October + November 2017 issue, which you can read by clicking here.
In this brand-new issue, Barista Magazine Editor-in-Chief Sarah Allen interviews Agnieszka on her preparation and execution for this year’s WBC. As part of our annual WBC special coverage, we decided to reach out to many women in coffee leadership around the world to ask their opinions on what Agnieszka’s win means for our industry.
In addition, our special WBC section features snapshots from around the competition and the World of Coffee. And each of the six finalists share the inspiration and recipe for the signature drinks they made on the world stage.
Our financial column “Cashbox” by Tracy Allen of Brewed Behavior returns in this issue of Barista Magazine with an article on everyone’s favorite topic: retirement planning. TL:DR? Start saving now.
We are all concerned about caring for our environment, and we all strive to reduce, reuse, and recycle. But often there are simple steps we can take to cut down on the amount of waste we generate in our homes and our businesses. We may not be able to eliminate all waste, but it ought to be our target. That sentiment is at the heart of our article “Goal: Zero Waste” by Ana Mallozzi and Jonathan Levy.
Cities and municipalities across the globe are taking steps to reduce the amount of single-use plastics that end up in landfills, and all too often, our oceans. One of the first targets is eliminating plastic straws. How can you get ahead of the curve? Learn about the options to plastic in our article by Jess Dunkin, “The Last Straw?”
Our popular equipment-care column by the guys at Black Rabbit Service Co., Alex Lambert and Jason “Double J” Johnson, is back in the August + September 2018 issue, where you ask the Qs and they give you the As.
Emilio Lopez Diaz is from El Salvador, but his reach is global. He’s the current chair of the international Coffee Roasters Guild, and he’s also a retailer, a roaster, and an equipment distributor. But Emilio, who operates Cuatro M in El Salvador, is also most famously known as a coffee farmer. He has a passion for learning, enjoys researching, and has a vision for a future where coffee farmers everywhere have the tools and education they need to create sustainable and profitable businesses. He’s also the subject of this issue’s “Master Q + A.”
The August + September 2018 Issue of Barista Magazine also features Field Reports from Tel Aviv, Israel; Melbourne, Australia, and Barista + Farmer Colombia. And, of course, we have our regular news and events sections, Pull, the Takeaway, and Foam, and all the new gear and goods in Stuff.
