Here are a few stories from the coffee world in the news today.
First up, Reuters reports that coffee production is set to rise worldwide, however, Colombian arabicas are still in short supply due to bad weather over the last two years. Brazil is expected to make up most of the Colombian shortfall with Central American producers also increasing yields. These are C market coffees.
Here Bloomberg reports on the projected 23% increase in production in Brazil this year (27% increase in arabica yields). And Japanese roasters (the third largest buyers of coffee) will have greater access to those new Brazilian crops as the Japanese government has just relaxed acceptable levels on a type of fungicide used to treat coffee plants in Brazil.
Meanwhile a bike-powered coffee bar is making its way around the city of New York, showing up a farmers’ markets and elsewhere, and a flash mob (or carrot mob in this story) is raising money for environmental sustainability and awareness in Vancouver, BC by descending on coffee shops and buying stuff.
