One thing’s for sure: I’ll sit up and take notice of any project that Gabriel Boscana’s a part of. I’ve known Gabe for years and years, and it’s been a pleasure to watch as his coffee career has developed him into one of the top green buyers and roasters in the country. Most recently, Gabe was the green buyer for Sightglass Coffee in San Francisco. A new project, however, has stolen his heart: Introducing Paramo Coffee Roasters, the soon-to-be newest member of the robust community of specialty coffee roasters in the San Francisco Bay Area.
I wanted to know more, so I contacted Gabe for the goods. He told me that Paramo Coffee Roasters was founded in 2013 by Robert Myers and Wes Wang, and Gabe is also part of the founding team. “Paramo’s first location will be in the middle of the ever bustling Embarcadero Center in San Francisco, close to the Ferry Building and right by the Embarcadero BART station,” says Gabe. “We will be serving an incredibly fast paced, high volume community, without sacrificing quality of hospitality or coffee. It’s very possible to do that well, but we’re striving to make that balance seem effortless.”
There’s something else really special setting Paramo apart from the rest: a commitment to the local community. “In addition to our commitment to exceptional product and service, we want to give back to the communities in which our cafes reside,” says Gabe. “We feel it is deeply important to support people at the local level, first and foremost. To do that, we will be partnering with charities in these neighborhoods.”
The guys behind Paramo are looking far into the future for their company, and already thinking beyond the first cafe. “The dream is that our modest efforts started in San Francisco can, hopefully, grow into something bigger,” Gabe continues. “Ultimately, we want to bring tasty coffees to people from all walks of life and if we can give something back in the process, we should. We have felt a need for a space that is all inclusive but still serving really good coffee and really excellent service. I think there are many folks who feel somewhat alienated by the super curated coffee spaces/menus and high end service in the Bay Area.”
Paramo will open its cafe in the spring of 2014 ”Gabe says May, fingers crossed. Roasting will take place off-site.
