Portland, Ore.’s trendy Pearl District will play host to a very special Thursday Night Throwdown tomorrow, at Christopher David, a design and style mecca ”complete with a café inside ”in Northwest Portland.
The event, which begins at 7 p.m. and is open to any and everyone, is called the Battle for Clean Water. Here’s how it works: Baristas buy in for $5, which goes to benefiting WaterAid, a nonprofit dedicated to building and implementing clean water services in developing countries.
Prizes for the best pours will be awarded thanks to sponsors Espresso Parts, Water Avenue Coffee, Barista Magazine, and Christopher David.
Food, music, beer, and wine to be offered!
Kevin Nichols of Christopher David is organizing this event, and here’s why: “I knew I wanted to host an event to bring the coffee community together; what better way to give back to the communities that so closely neighbor the origin of the very fruit that contributes to my career?” he says. “Last year I had the opportunity to travel to South America with Water Avenue Coffee to visit coffee farms. The purpose of the trip was to get closer to the coffee and grasp a deeper understanding of the Arabica varietal and the processes therein. Needless to say, the trip was incredible and I had the time of my life. However, I was moved by some of the communities we had to travel through in order to get to these coffee farms. It was clear their quality of life was less than satisfactory and one can only imagine what their drinking water must be like. Hence the birth of Battle for Clean Water!”
