Cover Feature: Joanna Alm

October + November 2024 issue of Barista Magazine cover feature two page spread with Joanna Alm.

Longtime coffee professional Joanna Alm sets lofty standards for her coffee company, Drop Coffee, while embracing family life in Sweden. Joanna actually started as a barista at Drop Coffee more than a decade ago, and now she and her husband own the company. After days working at the roastery, nothing makes her happier than heading out into the woods with her children or going to a nearby lake for a swim.

’The Art of the Upsell’

The Art of the Upsell two page illustrated spread from the October + November 2024 issue.

Selling coffee is only one way for a café to make money. In “The Art of the Upsell,“ marketing and specialty-coffee veteran Heather Kelley writes about strategies to help increase an average ticket and revenue through merch, displays, and more.

’The Regulars: The Benefits of Serving Warmth Where Everybody Knows Your Name’

The Regulars two page spread illustration of patrons in a cafe in the October + November 2024 issue.

The familiar faces and usual orders of a coffee shop’s regular customers form the backbone of a successful café. In “The Regulars,“ writer Rachel Morrison susses out how to turn occasional visitors into consistent customers, and how to ensure your staff treats your regulars with warmth and respect to keep them coming back time and again.

’One on One: Dr. Fabiana Carvalho’

One on one opening spread with a portrait of Dr. Fabiana Carvalho.

Raised in a coffee-farming family in Brazil, Dr. Fabiana Carvalho has led The Coffee Sensorium since 2017 and worked in biochemistry and psychobiology for a quarter-century. She’s using her background to explore how context shapes the perception of flavors and influences value judgments. Dr. Carvalho has also devoted time and research toward improving robusta production quality and increasing prices for farmers.

And Much More Inside

Also in the October + November 2024 issue, “The Knockbox,“ written by longtime coffee professional, former U.S. Barista Champion, and retailing expert Laila Ghambari, investigates what you need to consider when thinking of buying or selling a coffee shop; in “Foam“ we look at how sound can be used to brew coffee and the effects of chilling on brewing; our “Field Reports“ visit St. Louis and Alishan, Taiwan; and we have much, much more.
