Although the podcast has become an extremely popular way to listen to talk shows nowadays, the passion and excitement of a live radio program still remains strong, especially in Colombia. Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia’s (FNC) has put together a radio novela about the coffee industry to promote health-related safety measures toward COVID-19 and today’s coffee-growing society.
The soap opera is called Mi finca, mi hogar y tesoro, which translates as My farm, my home and treasure. The FNC has produced these episodes in partnership with the Ministry of Labour, the International Labour Organization, and the Colombia Avanza, and the story follows the Osorio Martínez family in rural Colombia. Throughout the course of 18 episodes they’ll encounter and address situations in coffee growing similar to what the rest of the listeners are experiencing during COVID-19. Some examples of these scenarios include generational integration, the do’s and don’ts of child labor, and disease prevention.
FNC chose a radio novela to broadcast this info because the communities in which they operate already prefer the radio. Much of the educational content that coffee producers consume is already through radio—70 programs to be exact. However, the radio episodes will also be available on the FNC’s YouTube and Soundcloud.
FNC currently operates in 603 municipalities within Colombia, and can be regarded as a leading ally in promoting this awareness. Tune into the show live, or check it out on YouTube here.
