Editor’s note:  We’re reposting this blog article about Temple Coffee in Sacramento because we just got some new photos from the company’s downtown location. We originally posted this as a preview to Temple’s 8-year anniversary party in mid November of 2013. Temple is a really stellar company that is playing a very big role in changing the state’s capital city over from dank, forgettable coffee to exceptional specialty brews.

Whatcha doing on November 16? If you’re in Northern California, I’ll tell you what you  should be doing: hitting the 8-year anniversary party of Temple Coffee in Sacramento!

Temple Coffee truly started the specialty revolution in the city of Sacramento when it opened eight years ago in a very cool building downtown.

It's super cozy inside, and perfect for whiling away sunny afternoons outside. I really love this cafe.

Having attended my undergraduate college, University of California at Davis ”a short drive from Sacramento ”I sure wish Temple had been here when I was a student. I can attest to the dearth of good coffee in the area at that time.

I first visited Temple Coffee in the summer of 2008, when I was helping to promote the now-defunct Bikes to Rwanda organization, and Temple generously sponsored an event at its shop to raise money.

That’s when I first met owner Sean  Kohmescher, a visionary in the industry who knows how to get his hands dirty: besides growing a quality, community-driven company, he’s been involved in the Barista Guild of America and countless other broader coffee events. He’s supported his baristas in competition, and he has a no-nonsense attitude when it comes to the coffee his company buys and roasts.

Part of the reason for this upcoming party is to celebrate the completion of the build-out of Temple’s new roastery and warehouse. After eight years, Temple now has three retail locations and a growing wholesale and online business ”the 3,000 square feet that this addition affords the company is going to go to very good use.

“The new facility will eventually house a larger roaster to keep up with the demand.    In its current state, it houses all production for the company, green bean storage, as well as a larger training room,” says Sean. “The new Temple training room has 4 espresso machines, 8 grinders, and projectors for education.    This room will be used to further the knowledge of staff, wholesale customers, potential wholesale customers, and the public for weekly cuppings and public coffee education classes.”
