I ran into Ryan Palmer, co-owner of Torque Coffee Roasters in Vancouver, Wash., while I was at the Cup of Excellence holiday party last night, and I was excited to hear about a cool project he has going at his beautiful roaster and cafe space: Torque is raising money for the Nelson Mandela Foundation by donating $3 from the purchase of specially marked 12-ounce bags of its blend, Apex.
The project kicked off at Torque ”which is located just over the bridge from Portland, Ore. ”yesterday.
“At Torque, we believe in supporting our community through collective efforts,” Ryan says. “We want to promote the idea that we can help one another by just being good to each other.”
Mandela, who died on December 5 in his home country of South Africa at age 95, helped bring an end to apartheid in his country, and was a dedicated human rights activist throughout his life. He spent 27 years in prison for “conspiracy to overthrow the state” ”not adhering to a pro-apartheid government. He was released from prison in 1990, and in 1994, he became South Africa’s first black president.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation is the globally celebrated Mandela’s nonprofit which is dedicated to empowering people and communities, and promoting democracy around the world.
Ryan and Torque’s goal with their fundraising campaign is to sell 200 bags of coffee for a total donation of $600. Get into Torque today for your bag!
