It’s not like there’s really ever a day when I don’t wake up in the morning and think, wouldn’t it be cool to be in Hawaii today? But the day I’m going to be mooning over the Big Island the most is coming right up, and there’s even more of a reason for it than sun and surf ”make that two reasons: really great coffee and really great food.
By now you’ve likely heard of Daylight Mind Coffee Company in Kailua-Kona, which is located on the Big Island that is known famously for its spectacular coffees from the Kona and Ka’u regions. Coffee scientist and author Shawn Steiman has a vision with Daylight Mind to give locals and tourists alike a true Big Island experience, which would mean bringing the best local coffees together with the greatest local foods, and offering them all in an unforgettably magical setting.
Now Daylight Mind has taken on perhaps its most ambitious ”not to mention coolest ”project yet: A special tasting menu to be offered on January 30 called The Whole Coffee. Shawn tells me that the menu will feature every part of the coffee, from skin to seed. “Roasted and brewed coffee are common coffee ingredients to cook with,” Shawn says. “This menu will use other parts of the fruit that are often discarded.”
To make it an even more grand event, Shawn has invited world-renowned wine expert, and editor-at-large for Wine Spectator magazine, Harvey Steiman to curate wine pairings for the dinner which begins at 6:30 p.m. Prior to the meal, at 4:30 p.m., Shawn and Harvey will host a coffee and wine pairing, where attendees will explore the similarities and differences between the two beverages with these experts in their respective fields.
The cost for the dinner is $130 per person; or $240 per person with wine pairing. Daylight Mind Coffee Company is located at 75-5770 Ali’i Dr., Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. For more information, call 808.223.0982.
