Barista Mag: Before coffee, did you work in a different job or industry, or what did you study in school?
Dmitry: I studied national economics at university, and I am currently studying for a PhD in regional economics at St Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance.
BMag: What was your first amazing experience with coffee?
Dmitry: When I discovered that cappuccino and espresso came from the same tree.
BMag: What would you like to see change about the coffee industry/community?
Dmitry: To see the consumers being more educated. To see less customs barriers between countries.
BMag: Name a barista you admire, and why:
Dmitry: Gwilym Davies ”he smiles a lot.
BMag: Besides your own cafe, what cafe do you think everyone should visit?
Dmitry: I haven’t been myself, but I have heard that Tailor Made [Greece] is worth visiting.
BMag: Which coffee producing country you would like to visit, and why?
Dmitry: Costa Rica. The coffee harvest coincides with the sea turtle mating season, and I want to be a turtle-saving volunteer, combined with a trip to the plantations.
BMag: What are your interests outside of coffee?
Dmitry: Tuning coffee equipment, cycling.
BMag: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Dmitry: I want to have my own coffee shop with brew bar and roastery.
BMag: Is there anyone you would like to thank or who helped you prepare for the WBC?
Dmitry: My colleague, Vasily Ladygin, who won the Russian Brewers Cup in 2013. Together we won three national championships as a team: Cup Tasting, Brewers Cup, and Barista!
