BARISTA MAGAZINE
December is here, bringing us ever closer to the end of the year. And as 2018 turns to 2019, it means it’s time for the December 2018 + January 2019 issue of Barista Magazine! We’re excited to launch the new issue, which features our traditional mix of in-depth features, stories from around the globe, business articles, and as always, much, much more. You can order a hard copy through our online store here. (Better yet, start a subscription and never miss an issue!) Or you can read it for free online on our website or take it with you with our free app.
On the cover it’s Steven Moloney, an Australian transplant to Sweden, and founder of the international phenomenon—and super-entertaining competition—known as The Barista League. Barista Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Sarah Allen interviews Steven about his coffee career, his inspiration behind The Barista League (which recently jumped the Atlantic to hold its first events in America), and what the future holds for the event.
Every year we ask dozens of coffee pros who work every day in the café what’s their favorite gear and equipment. We compile their answers and share them with you in our annual feature “Best Bar Tools.”
Earlier this autumn, the C-market (or commodity) price for coffee fell to its lowest point in several years. The falling C means that for some farmers the cost of production is higher than what they can earn for their harvest. Writer Chris Ryan breaks down what the low C means for producers and how it affects the specialty coffee market in “A Volatile Presence: Understanding the C Market.”
What does it really take to open your own shop? (Besides the indefatigable spirit, superior customer service, dedication to brewing great coffee, and working seriously long hours, of course.) Maggie Rivard looks at all of the expenses that a new owner must be prepared for and how to create a budget to make sure the costs are covered in “The Cost of Opening a Coffee Shop.”
Tom Owen, who started the green coffee supplier for home roasters Sweet Maria’s with his wife, Maria Troy, talks with Barista Magazine about his history in coffee, why he started writing about it, and how he and Maria came to start their business years ago in Master Q+A.
We hope you enjoy the December 2018 + January 2019 issue of Barista Magazine!
