Barista Magazine is super stoked to be the exclusive media sponsor for the World Coffee In Good Spirits Championship (WCIGS) and the World Latte Art Championship (WLAC), both of which will take place in Melbourne, Australia, May 15 “18!
As such, we will produce a full color, glossy event program that will feature profiles of all the competitors, information about how the championships work, profiles of the outgoing champions, schedule and party info, and much more!
I attended Dalla Corte’s DC Campus in Milan last year ”DC Campus is a free 3-day workshop to which all national Coffee In Good Spirits and Latte Art Champions are invited to play on the Dalla Corte machines (Dalla Corte is of course the generous espresso machine sponsor for both championships), practice with their peers, experiment with different milks, alcohols, and competition styles, and build community. Some of them would go on to attend the World Championship in Nice, France last summer all by themselves, without a support coach or any friends from home. But after DC Campus, they had a whole bunch of friends: the ones they made at DC Campus. It was really wonderful to see these baristas come together for these three special days in Milan.
Of course, DC Campus will take place again in April this year for all national champions preparing for Melbourne. And I’ll be there reporting on it once again!
Anyway, after I saw firsthand the camaraderie and talent at DC Campus, I knew Barista Magazine should be a bigger part of these two championships.
It’s exciting to see national winners in these categories for 2014 being announced! We just learned this morning that Joe Mollura of Brandmeesters in the Netherlands won his country’s Coffee In Good Spirits Championship and is headed to Melbourne. Barista Magazine’s publisher Kenneth R. Olson is headed to Italy tomorrow to attend SIGEP, where he will watch not only the Italian Barista Championship, but the Italian Latte Art Championship! And I head to France soon for that country’s coffee championships: Coffee In Good Spirits, Barista Championship, and Latte Art!
The United States will host its first-ever national Latte Art Championship in Seattle in April and we should have a CIGS competition up and running by 2015.
The WCIGS and WLAC are two of the most interesting and fast-growing coffee events in the world right now, and Barista Magazine is proud to be a part of them. Can’t wait for Melbourne in May!
