BMag Back Atcha “ Week of November 18 “24, 2013

Welcome to Sunday on the BMag blog! It’s been a super-busy week, and if you missed any of it, well, you’ve come to the right place. This is BMag Back Atcha our weekly blog-in-review post where you can find links to every story we published this week on the blog all in one place. So let’s get at it!

First up, we had the final post from the Barista & Farmer project in Puerto Rico which brought 15 Italian baristas to work and live on a coffee farm. If you haven’t check out the Barista & Farmer YouTube channel, you’ll want to as they filmed everything! It’s some pretty great stuff!

Then we had the announcement of the Good Food Awards finalists for the coffee category. Winners will be announced in December.

Barista Magazine‘s Editor, Sarah Allen, has been in Seoul, South Korea this week participating in the World Coffee Leaders Forum and visiting the Cafe Expo which drew more than 100,000 attendees. Here’s her preview of the event:  Coffee Leaders Gather in South Korea This Week

That brought us to this week’s installment of our weekly trivia contest for fun and prizes: Humpday Giveaway! This week’s prize was a pair (that is two winners) of Barista Magazine t-shirts!

Following that we had a post about our big, new project: Barista Magazine’s Coffee Scout! Coffee Scout is a crowd-sourced worldwide map of cafés so that you can always find a spot for good coffee no matter where you are! If you haven’t added your cafe to the map, it’s quick and easy, and you can do it right here!

Then we had Sarah’s first report from on the ground in Seoul including lots of pics of the crazy and cool stuff she found on the ginormous trade show floor.

One of the cool things Sarah found on the show floor was Tim Wendleboe (2004 WBC champion and owner of the self-title cafe and roastery). More specifically what she found was Tim demoing two new home brewers that he and Scandinavian design and electronics firm Wilfa have just introduced. And guess what? They’re pretty dang awesome!

Next up was a post about what the falling C-market (ie. commodity coffee market) means for farmers on the ground, specifically in Colombia. Bottom line: it makes a hard job even harder, and it puts the future of coffee farming for a lot of growers in doubt as the price they’re receiving now is less than the cost of producing the coffee. Bad, bad news.

Sarah recapped the crazy, fun competition called Angels in Us: Barista Grand Prix, which took place at the Cafe Show in Seoul, with photos from the event that gave competitors 25 minutes to make espressos, cappuccinos, and not one but two signature beverages.

Finally, we featured photos and news from Bee Coffee’s fundraiser throw down for men’s health.
Happy Movember!
